Welcome to my words!

I love words. The way they work, what we make them mean, how they fit together, how we use them to make the world around us respond. Without thought, words are stillborn sounds. Without words, thoughts are a river in a sea.

We can use words to help or harm, as songs or stones. We even arm ourselves with charms against them. Remember when we were kids? “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me!” But we all know that names can hurt us; that is why we chant our charm – to repair the shield for our hearts that cruel words can cut through. Knowing how words work and what strategies people use to influence us not only protects us, but puts us in a place where we can use words to shape a better world. I can’t change the whole world, but I can change mine.

Words can make us feel and think and act – or stop us from doing so. The effect of a word creates an “affect” in us – an emotional response that motivates our actions. And this is what my blog will be reflecting on, but in a personal way. Through different texts in different genres that I have written and read. Through thoughts on language and the way words weave together. An eclectic mix. For me and you.
